NINE
Under-Expressed
What This Expression May Be Doing for You
The Nine is connected with compassion, empathy, understanding, acceptance, and the ability to recognize and respond to the experiences of others.

When compassion is under expressed, other people's emotions or struggles may feel uncomfortable, overwhelming, or difficult to know how to respond to. You may distance yourself, shut down emotionally, minimize what someone is experiencing, or focus on practical solutions rather than remaining present with feelings you cannot fix.

Creating distance can also be protective. Allowing yourself to fully recognize another person's pain means being affected by something you may not be able to change. Detachment can make difficult situations feel more manageable, particularly when you aren't sure what someone needs from you or worry that becoming emotionally involved will ask more of you than you can give.

The work of under expressed compassion isn't to absorb what other people are feeling or become responsible for easing their pain. It's to develop the ability to remain open and present with another person's experience—offering understanding and care without needing to fix it, carry it, or make it disappear.

When Compassion Is Difficult to Access
Compassion can become harder when you don't understand someone's choices, believe they should know better, or feel frustrated by the way they are handling their circumstances. Learning to see more of the person behind the behaviour can create room for understanding without requiring you to agree with, excuse, or take responsibility for what they do.

When Difficult Emotion Makes You Pull Away
Another person's pain, distress, or emotional intensity can be difficult to stay present with when you cannot make it better. Shutting down, minimizing what they are experiencing, or creating distance can reduce your own discomfort while also limiting your ability to remain emotionally available.

When Protecting Yourself Becomes Disconnection
Creating space can sometimes be necessary, particularly when you are emotionally overwhelmed. But when withdrawal becomes the primary way you protect yourself from other people's emotions, it can also limit closeness, understanding, and connection.

Chakra Support
Chakra meditations help clear and heal by bringing focused awareness to each energy centre. Through breath, intention, and visualization, these meditations release blockages, restore balance, and activate the natural flow of energy in the body—supporting emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.

The following chakras may support a more balanced expression of these energies.

Heart Chakra
Supports compassion, empathy, acceptance, and greater openness to connecting with another person's emotional experience without needing to agree with or fix it.

NINE
Over-Expressed
What This Expression May Be Doing for You
The Nine is connected with compassion, empathy, understanding, acceptance, and the ability to recognize and respond to the experiences of others.

When compassion is over-expressed, other people's pain can become difficult to separate from your own. You may absorb what others are feeling, feel deeply affected by suffering around you, or become overly invested in helping, supporting, or easing what someone else is going through. Caring can begin to feel like a responsibility rather than simply something you offer.

Compassion can also make boundaries difficult. Saying no, stepping back, or allowing someone to struggle may feel uncaring when you can see why they are hurting or understand what has contributed to their behaviour. Your ability to see another person's pain can make it easier to excuse what affects you, give more than you have to give, or remain involved longer than is healthy for you.

The work of over-expressed compassion isn't to become less caring or sensitive. It's to develop compassion with boundaries—allowing yourself to understand and care about what someone else is experiencing without absorbing it, becoming responsible for it, or abandoning your own needs in response to theirs.

When Someone Else's Pain Becomes Yours
Caring deeply about what someone is experiencing can make it difficult to separate their pain from your own. You can understand, care, and remain connected without carrying their emotional experience with you or making their suffering yours to hold.
Support:
→ Finding Balance
→ Presence & Attention
When the Weight of the World Becomes Personal
Awareness of suffering, injustice, or what other people are going through can become emotionally consuming. Caring about what happens in the world doesn't require you to carry all of it. Learning where to place your attention and where you can meaningfully participate can help compassion remain sustainable.

When You Feel Responsible for Making It Better
Watching someone struggle can create a strong urge to help, fix, reassure, or protect them from pain. Recognizing the difference between supporting someone and becoming responsible for their experience allows you to care without taking over what is theirs to navigate.
Support:
→ Discomfort Strategies / Trying to Help
→ Finding Balance

When Compassion Makes Boundaries Difficult
Understanding someone's pain can make saying no, stepping back, or allowing consequences feel uncaring. Boundaries allow you to remain compassionate without continually accommodating someone, accepting behaviour that affects you, or sacrificing your own needs because you understand theirs.
